linux password

when i go to terminal in ubuntu ,it opens with the screen
ggauravr@ubuntu:~$
and when i enter something such as sudo gedit/boot/grub/menu.lst
it displays
[sudo]password for ggauravr:
and when i try to write something there ,it doesn't accept anything..i.e the letter i'm typing is not displayed there.
plz solve the prob..thank u

The password you are typing will not be displayed on the screen. That's the way it's supposed to work.

Just type the password and hit the enter key.

thank u very much
but when i type the above command and give the password it says that the command could not be found
and also plz tell me the way to get connected to the internet in ubuntu..just clicking on the network icon is not working..

You need to do this command if you are in ubuntu - make sure to include the spaces in the command.

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
