I have winXP installed on my Compaq Presario C785 laptop.
Recently I have developed interest in 'hacking' and want to learn it.
winXP is not a suitable OS to do so and I have heard that Linux is the best choice for learning hacking. Which Linux OS should I use and how should I install it over the existing version of XP as I do not want to loose my data ?
I have downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 from :
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
Is it sufficient or I should use something better?

I know that uncontrolled hacking can lead me to jail, so please suggest me some good methods and tutorials to learn hacking.

Please HELP !!!!!!!!!!

Hacking your own registry is OK. Hacking a website is not!

well you can start here: (link edited out by mod)

i used that one for a while and it is a very good place to start. Other wise there are some good books around on network security and such for free on the web if you just search around for them. Also to really understand how the hacker culture is you should check out the movie "hackers are people too".

I first want to say that you need to practice on a different computer then one you use for your daily tasks. Hacking is not a bad thing if you use it to improve an operating system or the way a computer handles various programs and such. Be prepared to spend many, many, hours learning how to tweak a registry or change a files execution to get the results you want. Be prepared to crash your system over and over again.

I think you need to ask yourself "Why do you want to learn to hack?" If you even think one time about doing something that is illegal you need to pay a visit to a federal prison and see if that is how you want to spend the rest of your life. I'm not a MOD but I will add that you won't get any help with an illegal hack on this site.

You definitely won't get help on illegal hacking here.

Also, if you are asking for help with that type of hacking... you've already failed the test and will never be a hacker.

Hacking to me is a way of putting your nose in other peoples business;about as bad as creating a virus.

why was my link removed that site is completely legit and safe to use.

@sparky hacking is actually a good thing because with out it your system would be so insecure and have so many holes that anything could get in. Also most hackers aren't the bad ones they are the ones finding the holes in programs to fix them and make them better

Jack. Because of this one line, from that site, "Don’t ask directly about hacking, just phrase it in an indirect way."

One can't hack what they have no or little knowledge about.
Think about the statement.

I know of some hackers and they're good,it's the crackers that do damage. And my machine is secure enough without having to hack.

I think there is a difference between a 'hacker' and a 'cracker'.
I do not want to do any illegal task or steal some data from someone's computer. I know that a cracker must not revel his identity on the net else he will be behind the bars.
I just want to know how the system(especially the security systems) work and I think hackers are the people who maintain them. Such people are also trained and its not illegal.
I just wanted to know if there is a way(of course a legal one) to practice what I learn in hacking.
I do not want to be pro in hacking, I just want to know how hacking works.

just search google for some online books or download some free ones. This is also a good show to watch to learn about hacking: (edit by mod. That is theft (the Wi-Fi part))

you can read this too: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html

Trust me, I am not trying to hack other people's computers or interfaces... I am studying in college to be a Programmer Analyst/Web Developer.
I am just having some issues with Daemon tools and Mounting a DVD drive to my hard drive. Its kind of hacking cause you are hacking your own Drivers and placing one that you don't have as a "legit" drive.. If you know what I mean.
