Laptop Encryption
(9 posts)Well there are many applications available to encrypt documents, there are some especially made for Laptops but I would just use normal Encryption Software... Don't forget about Windows EFS and Windows Bitlocker which is built into Vista Ultimate operating systems, if you choose to use Windows EFS all you have to simply do is right click a file or folder, click the Advanced button, check the box "Encrypt contents to secure data" and click ok, it is as easy as that, but you must back up your Backup Encryption Certificate!
I have provided a few links below for you to look at...

- Backup Encryption Certificate!
- Secure you Word 2007 private documents

Hope this helps

Colin, most corporate users will want to use full-disk encryption for a laptop that might be stolen or lost. If the company is worried about sensitive information falling into the wrong hands, then a full-disk solution is the only way to go because you never know what data will be helpful to competitors or embarrassing to the company if leaked.
Vista Ultimate and Enterprise come with BitLocker, as Jordan mentioned. BitLocker is full-disk encryption, while EFS is just for encrypting individual files or folders. To use BitLocker, a system should really have a Trusted Platform Module (TPM), which is common on business-class laptops.
Another way to go is with TrueCrypt, which is free and open-source. I have used TrueCrypt and it works well. There are other solutions out there, as well, some free and some commercial.
Bitlocker is inbuilt to certain versions as Vista and is not available seperatly as far as I know, sorry. Does your company you work at use XP then? If so XP Professional has inbuilt EFS like vista which allows you to encrypt files and folders, but not full disk encryption like vista's Bitlocker.
