It takes a very long time for the icons to appear, I noticed that only 14 processes are running, but after a few minutes the other 10 appear (making 24 in all) any ideas?

Well, computer spec's, make and model, amount of RAM, CPU speed, disk speed, would help here? Is this 'new' or was it gradually getting there?

Install ANY new programs? How many programs do you Auto-Start?

What are the 14 processes running and do you need them all?

Do you have programs/processes running that need to connect to the Internet?
