Hey, my family are thinking of getting a new computer, but we're going to hold off until october-november so we can get windows 7 instead of vista.Anywho, i thought, seeing as i have time i should start picking out some liable candidates. This is the one that caught my eye, however im worried that i might be sacrificing performance and power for the extra space afforded by not having any " tower".

http://www.dell.com/us/en/home.....#38;~ck=mn

To this i have added
Intel® Pentium® Dual Core Processor E5400 (2.7GHz, 2MB, 800MHz FSB)
4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz- 2DIMMs ( Memory)
500GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE: Slot load CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability edit
VIDEO CARD :nVidia GeForce 9200 Integrated Graphics

Anwyho, i was just wondering if you could tell me if this computer would be good for gaming. ATm my computer runs World of Warcraft fine ( Except for lagaran -.-), but im kinda moving on now so i want to be able to try Aion, Old republic etc. Or even play age of conan ( It runs really slow on my comp). Anyway, i want a computer thats performance is good enough that it will still be able to play the games that come out in 5 years time, and is still able to do the normal office and internet stuff.

Anywho, if you can help thanks very much =)

If you put a decent graphics card in, it might be OK. Not a barnstormer, but decent middle of the road. A top performer would look different.

Conkernog, hello. The Studio One is not a good computer for gaming. You sacrifice a LOT by not having a tower. That system is designed to save space and look good, not for serious gaming. There is no option to add a graphics card and integrated graphics will always disappoint. Even Dell explains that integrated graphics is: "for typical office productivity applications, Internet use, relatively small digital images, low-resolution video, simple games and other relatively undemanding applications."

5 years is a long time in computers and to buy one today and expect it to be playing new games then is asking a lot. You are talking about at least a £1000+ tower (no monitor or peripherals) to do that and you would be expecting to do a couple upgrades to it in that time. That computer you are looking at is only suited to basic/old games. I suspect it would struggle with WoW, integrated graphics are not made for 3D.

If you want to look towards the future, 'over buy' is the way to go. Don't just look at today but project the future requirements.

I suggest you look at Dell XPS 435T, which is what I have.

Major upgrades from the Studio 1 is Intel I7 processor, DDR3 Tri-channel 1066 RAM, discrete Video card with 1GB available, all more powerful and geared towards gaming, both today and in the future.

Downside here is that it only ships with Vista 64 bit...

As long as it comes with a Windows 7 upgrade why would you want anything but Vista 64bit?

wow, thanks so much everyone, tbh i only know the bear essentials of computers hardware wise, and the way the computer companies dress up every mediocre chip and gadget makes it seems as if it ready for anything -.-.In retrospect the 5 years into the future thing might be a but hopeful too =P.

Thanks very much for the help, ill check out that one that you mentioned ispalten.

I dunno if my job was to sell computers I think that would be the goal. I know what you mean though, you hear all their candy coated words and think "Whoa I'm getting a super computer!" Really, you are getting an average computer at best or you just really can't decipher their words.

The worst is graphics cards, I for the life of me, cannot determine what is good and what isn't. I just assume the more dedicated video memory the better, the faster clock rate the better, the more the better really. You really have to find out for yourself what is good and what isn't. However, all the helpful people here will help you decipher all the tech stuff.

Yeah, graphics cards are a problem because there are so many and a new one every day - no way to keep up with them. Of the newer ones, I like this one.

@ThatGuy, don't be snowed by marketing speak about graphics cards. To see how these cards really stack up against each other, you need to view benchmarks such as the charts at Tom's Hardware. And not just one benchmark, but look at all that apply to the kinds of applications that *you* will be using.

Looking at the Q3/2009 benchmarks confirmed my suspicion that the Radeon HD 4350 GPU, that is the *stock* graphics in the XPS 435T, is weak when it comes to gaming.

Scott, sure the minimal video card is weak, but you can upgrade, for a price. I have the 4870 1GB card.

The Dell I referenced only supports a single video card. Want SLI or Crossfire double or tripple cards, this system isn't for you, but they will increase costs due to more cards and heftier power supply.

Performance, game or otherwise is a matter of choices, and one is money. Bottom line, it is to buy the best one you can that fits inside your budget. Choices should be made on usage as well.

Does it matter though? Anything you buy today will be outdated in a matter of weeks if not sooner. The hard part is figuring out what you'll want tomorrow...
