Good evening,

I'm the happy owner (haha) of a laptop with Windows Vista installed. I am fed up of my Windows Media Player so my friend suggested I try VLC out. However, every time I try to open it, it says that the "Installer integrity check has failed and that common causes may be an incomplete download or damaged media." It then indicates that I should contact the creator of the programme to obtain an updated version (but this is the most recent one).
I checked the NSIS website to see if they could suggest anything helpful, but I am still banging my head and wishing I could watch Dexter Season two.
I have also tried running it under Windows XP and other compatibility modes, to no avail.
Please help me. I'm going insane.

Try using the zip package instead of the installer.

Most likely want happened is the download didn't finish and you need to redownload the installer.
It's happened to me before where I download a file, the browser says it's done downloading but the it actully isn't.

I just downloaded VLC 0.8.6f for Windows from the USA mirror at videolan.org. Filename is vlc-0.8.6f-win32.exe, size is 9.27 MB (9,730,075 bytes), MD5 hash is DA6E5C8017AF6055E9B42EAF4183061C. Check yours against this.

Oh, yeah, "Dexter" rocks!

VLC media player works well in Vista Ultimate x64,I've also friends who run it on XP Home edition and Vista Basic/Premium.The Vista package does not come with all the codecs needed to run all types of media.Go here to download the codecs :-

For Vista 32bit :-

For Vista 64bit :-
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Vist.....d5535.html

Hope this helps.
P.S. you can also get a new version of VLC player from that site.

sweetskye, one of the benefits of VLC is that it plays the most common media formats without the need to install additional codecs or DirectShow filters. I would strongly recommend that you NOT install any codec packs. While these work for many people, they also cause big problems for others. I know this because I have cleaned up after them and it's not pretty.

Your friend who recommended VLC probably knows this and is protecting you from having to install codecs or deal with codec problems. If you get VLC installed and find that it does not play a particular video that you have, you can post back here and I (or someone) will help you get it working.

If you cannot get VLC to work, try other options like e.g. "Real Alternative". There are at least a dozen media players available. Also: try to install VLC from other sites (e.g. the ones suggested above) and "SAVE" them first e.g. in Downloads (not "RUN"). Then install it from Downloads.

I think VLC sucks because it does not have itegrated on screen controls when running full screen, so you get pop up controls in a new window. I really hate that. The worst part is that it does have the integrated osc on the mac version. Bah!

I want the controls for playback and search to appear on the screen when I hover the mouse over it like in WMP or QT or almost any other player. I don't want seperate controls.

There are a limited number of keyboard shortcuts. But I suppose you knew that.

Yeah it's mainly the playback scroll bar that I would want to be integrated into the full screen display mode. Media Play Classic is good enough for the things that I can't get to play in WMP 11
