um - i have a vista laptop that i got completely on accident and now i want to change the OS to windows. i followed the instructions on this page: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto.....a-computer
it worked well until it got to making the new partition space for xp. i was able to shrink the vista volume without any problems so now i have the unallocated space, but when i right click it and select New Simple Volume, i follow the wizard, but all it says at the end is "there is not enough space on the disk(s) to complete this operation".
help pls?

Try using GParted. I had more success using GParted, rather than Vista's built in one. Although, GParted can take a VERY long time, it should work.
