Install Vista In-Place
(11 posts)No, I want to install Vista Ultimate over top of Vista Ultimate, in order to overwrite all system files to original. Much the same way you would with Windows XP. You could consider it a repair of the OS, except that I want to start it within Windows and it just restart and copy the files overtop of the current installation.
jraparrish,
Think about it for a moment.
How would a (Clean Installed) Vista O/S Registry know how to (change itself automatically) to accommodate previously installed programs and software ?? XP cannot do this either as you seem to imply in your post.
LH has a good solution in his above post.
Obviously I am not being clear, as I have installed XP on hundreds of machines and have done exactly what I am asking about so many times I cannot count them. I do not want to perform a clean install. I want to install as if it were upgrading a previous installation. The machine is running Vista Ultimate now, I want to insert the DVD and do what would amount to an upgrade of the OS. In Windows XP we call it Installing in Place. I am looking for a way to do this with Vista.
The machine is experiencing problems with the Office 2007 suite and Windows updates. It will not allow the Office 2007 MSI to run, it simply closes it back down. Therefore I cannot re-install it or uninstall it. Windows updates download but fail to install. It is physically in North Carolina and I am in Florida. The OS is most likely the core issue, and SFC is not fixing it. I want to repair the core OS without having to re-install all the applications. I do not want to make an image of it, and the point of the problem is just too far back to simply revert to a Restore Point. Ghost is simply not a solution for such a problem unless it is used in a fashion similar to a Restore Point. Window XP would allow an Install in Place, and I am simply wanting to attempt to fix this issue by doing exactly what I have done many many times before with Windows XP.
jraparrish,
From your description of the issues, I will say that the machine is the best candidate I have run across for a Clean Install of all Software in +25 years of building. However, if you would like to do it your way, then I feel sure other members will be glad to jump-in with other less intense good solutions.
Best Regards,

A help forum works much better when people read the posts carefully, and do not get confused by other posts that are made without carefully reading the question. I am impressed by only knowledge that is helpful and not just a claim to experience. I am sure there are many knowledgeable posters on this forum, but this question has not produced one of them. I made absolutely no mention of imaging in my original post but have found that is the thing everybody keeps zeroing in on. I support 1600 desktops and 700 Laptops and am the Symantec Ghost Solutions Suite 2.5 Administrator. I have more cumulative experience with Ghost and Windows XP than most posters on this forum. But yet, I get posts like "Think about it for a moment.
How would a (Clean Installed) Vista O/S Registry know how to (change itself automatically) to accommodate previously installed programs and software ?? XP cannot do this either as you seem to imply in your post.
LH has a good solution in his above post." Clean Install? when did I mention a clean install? from RAPHOENIX. That looked alot like he did not even read the question. Then an arrogant post claiming he had built computers for 25+ years. I am 50 years old, and read your member profile. What a load of crap, if I were in my 20's or 30's I might have bought it. You didn't even know that Windows XP had a Repair feature. You are a johnny come lately, nothing more. Guess I will stick to Google from now on. Sorry to have bothered any of you.
What we have here jraparrish, is a failure to communicate. Nothing new on a forum as I'm sure you've noticed. It's too bad you didn't get a satisfactory answer to your question but that in no way gives you the right to attack a fellow member.
