I have read the tweak that this site gives to remove text from the desktop icon, but it still has not worked with me.

No matter what method I do, I cannot get the type to disappear. This is what I am doing:
1. Right click icon and select "rename"
2. Press "Delete" to clear the text
3. Hold down Alt and type 255 (Num lock is on since this is a laptop
4. While holding down Alt, I push enter.

For the space bar method
1. Right click icon and select "rename"
2. Press "Delete" to clear the text
3. Press the space bar
4. Press enter

Nothing is happening. Any suggestions?

Remove Text from Desktop Icons
How a user sets up their desktop is strictly a matter of personal preference, but if you're looking for a very clean, streamlined look then consider removing the text from desktop icons. Since this is tweak has to be set individually for each icon, shortcuts that you save to the desktop temporarily before deleting or finding them a permanent home will still be easily identifiable by their text titles. To implement the tweak:

Right click the icon and select [Rename]
Name the icon Alt+255 and hit Enter
( this means you hold down the Alt key and type 255 then release the Alt key )
The text will be gone from the icon.

For each successive icon to have the text eliminated, repeat the above sequence adding an additional Alt+255 sequence. For example, the second no text icon would be 'renamed' Alt+255 Alt+255, the third no text icon Alt+255 Alt+255 Alt+255, etc.

It works Great, I just did it. Right click-rename-then alt key then type 255 then let go of the alt key.

This part did not work for me I used just Alt+255 :For each successive icon to have the text eliminated, repeat the above sequence adding an additional Alt+255 sequence. For example, the second no text icon would be 'renamed' Alt+255 Alt+255, the third no text icon Alt+255 Alt+255 Alt+255, etc.

For matt: on my laptop, I have to hold alt and then the function key to make the numpad work. Numlock is on but I still need to hold Fn.
