i tried to install an operating system on my laptop and well, im lost

i think i might have broken it, i downloaded the os and got it on a cd and i went to the partition and pressed f8, it restarted and instead of going to a menu like i thought it was supposed to it just keeps shutting off even when i go to my main partition, i am far from a computer expert

Also, did you set your CD/DVD drive as the first boot drive in your systems BIOS. If you don't do that, it will not read the CD/DVD drive until after a successful boot.
