Mornin' mates!

I recently built this machine and it is currently running XP (so I know that the hardware is good).
Last weekend I bought a 1 TB drive (thinking that I would use it in this machine instead of the older 250GB drive that is currently running the show) and tried to install Vista on it without success. The install process was slow and after it did the first reboot, it just kinda hung... the message on the screen said that it was completeing the install, however the status bar wasn't moving at all over the course of the next couple of hours. Eventually this screen moved on and a black screen with a while coursor (which I could move with the mouse) replaced it. From this point it does nothing... it sat like that for over 24 hours before I gave up and rebooted it. Apparently the install wasn't complete... I've tried running a repair on it w/o success, and I have tried entering safe mode (as it lists the programs that it is loading, it gets to crcdisk.sys and hangs) and have tried re-installing it a couple more times none of which are having any measure of success.

I'm not trying to do anything fancy here like setting up a dual boot... its just a straight one OS install on this machine, and when I'm doing this it is the only HD I have plugged into it (so there shouldnt' be any kind of interferrence from XP).

As other tests I dropped this same 1TB drive in my old computer and Vista installed on it just fine.
As a second test, I dropped 40GB IDE drive in my old computer and it installed there perfectly as well.
However, when I installed the 40GB drive in my new machine and tried loading VISTA on it, it went through the same problems as I have mentioned above.

Any input or suggestions on what I could do to get this going would be greatly appreciated.
Thx in Adv

PS: I'm sure I missed some details in there somewhere, so if you need to know anything else just let me know

Hi Doc,

I assume we are talking about a Desktop computer and not a laptop. Yes?
Can you install XP on the new computer with the new HDD?
Recommend you remove the current partition on the new HDD,
then create a new partition for XP to install on.
Let me know if this works.
Recommend you NOT have the new computer connected to the internet.
We don't want the software to try to activate the XP install. This XP install is for test purposes only.
If you have any questions, just ask. :)

Doc,

If the XP install works, download and run this Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor 1.0

This will tell you is your new computer is capable of running under Vista.
Since you didn't provide the new computer's specs, this is the next best thing.

Sorry I didn't have the specs posted earlier (I was in a rush to get out the door)

Mobo: ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe (with 4 Gig of RAM)
CPU: ATHLON64 X2 6000+
Graphics: ASUS EAH4670

(And yes, to answer your previous question, it is a desktop system I'm working on.)

My gut is telling me that its either something in the BIOS (as a friend of mine was in there checking out some stuff a while ago), or maybe this new machine of mine knows what I'm trying to do and just doesn't want to have to deal with Vista.

In about 2 hours I'll be home able to try the XP install.

Thanks again for all the help! :)

From the tests you list, it sounds like the problem may be the new 1TB hard drive you got as you said Windows Vista installed on all the other drives.
Sometimes you can get a hard drive that is not working right from the get go, it shouldn't happen offtin but it does happen and should it be the problem then you should find out now so you can send the hard drive back before you waste more time trying to install an Operating System on it.
Most hard drive manufacturers have at least a 3 year warranty where they will replace the drive for most failures.
You should download the diagnostic tools from the hard drive manufacturer's web site and make sure the hard drive is working properly before you continue.
You can usually download the tools on a bootable disc and run tests for a few hours to make sure it's working right.
Should you need help finding the diagnostic tools and using them just let me know what make and model of hard drive you have and I will assist you with it.

Mornin guys!
First off, I just want to say thaks for all the help!

@ Gandalf
I tried installing XP last night on this new machine, but with no success... it errored out part way through the install (telling me that my install CD was either dirty or damaged... though it looks perfectly OK to me). That got me thinking... what if I'm having these problems due to an issue with my DVD Drive? I'm thinking that tonight I'm going to swap the drives between my 2 machines and give it another go

I also tried the Upgrade Advisor, and it confirmed that I do meet the min spec for Vista.

@OzSpitt
Cheers mate! I verfied by settings against the list and everything looks like it should work.
(I don't know if that's a good thing or not ;) )

@Justin
I was able to run the install on the 1TB drive when it was connected to my old machine. Is it possible that a faulty drive would work perfectly with one machine and not on another? I've downloaded a couple of utils from WD, and will give those a go tonight when I get home from work.

Thanks again everyone, I really appreciate the help!

Doc, you are the best tech on the scene. If I/we can say something that makes you think about the issue, then I/we have done my/our job(s).

You obvious are not computer ignorant, so go with your gut. Just let me/us know what you do so if it doesn't work I/we don't recommend that action AND if it does work, the member with a similar issue will have a solution to try and I/we can learn from your brilliant gut idea. :) Swapping the DVD drive out is a great idea. You see. You knew you had a drive to swap with. We didn't.

Here's to the best technician on the scene.
*That tasted good.*
*No, Doc. Not until you get that computer fixed.* :(

Never to old to learn. Remembering is another thing all together. (:~)

Mornin' Gandalf!
The only thing I'm interested in drinking right now is a pot of coffee... that could change though in a couple of hours once I'm fully awake. ;)

As it is, I've got some good news and some bad news... The good news is that Vista is now installed on my machine. The bad news is I have no idea how or why. Let me take it from the top, and see if maybe you can see what happened.

When I got in last night I swapped the 2 DvD drives around, and had no success with the install. So, I shut it down hooked my other drives back up and fired it back up again (with a quick stop in BIOS to reconfig my boot sequence so my XP drive would launch). Somehow, when I did this my old XP drive didn't boot... somehow the incomplete Vista install tried to give it a go instead... and somehow it finished installing. I'm lost on how/why it happened as this machine wasn't even supposed to look at the 1TB drive when it booted.

Something that I find interesting is that now when this machine boots up there is a screen that flashes on my screen for only a moment that asks me if I want to boot up with Vista or "an older operating system". Literally I have half a second to react to this before Vista just takes over. (So if I want to use XP instead I've got to start tapping an arrow key before it gets there so I don't miss it). So, I've now got something here that I wasn't even looking for... a Dual Boot system.

Something else that I've noticed (just cuz I feel like rambling... I'm going to pin it on the coffee not waking me up as fully as it should have by now) is that even when I now boot this machine up with the 1 TB drive not installed in it it looks like Vista is trying to fire up (the green scrolling vista bar shows up on my screen instead of the XP) So, I think that there might be some vista files that made their way onto my XP boot drive... does this make sense? Is this something that Vista is known to do? Is there an easy way to tell if this has happened? (like searching for a filename that is exclusive to Vista, that shouldn't be anywhere else on this machine?

When I get home tonight, I'm going to unplug the 1TB and reboot just to see what happens. (I hope that I don't have a full blown vista install on that drive... that could make things ugly)

Thanks for stickin' with me through all this!

Doc, you do have interesting issues. I can only surmise at this point.

NOTE: never say "other" anything. Please be specific. I get confused real easily.
If you put the original DVD drive back in, say that. Thanks.

Have you ever installed a patch and have it tell you to reboot to finish the patching process?
Well, I would surmise that this is what happened here. After the "reboot", the Vista install kicked in to finished the installation procedure.

I've never played with dual OS, so you have me at a disadvantage there.
Do you want the Dual OS? As to what really happened, I'd be guessing. To many variables.
If you want Vista and Vista is working, abet a little odd on start up, then let it ride.
The choice is yours. *Decisions, decisions.*

As for sticking with you, I'm an old terrier. I don't let go until I get what I want. :)
Again, I wasn't there so I only know what you tell me.

Let me know how you want to play this and I'll be happy to help.
There is no sense starting to troubleshoot, if you like what you have.

My apologies Galdalf.
The "other" drives that I was referring to there are 1)the HD that I have XP installed on 2) the HD I have all my games on 3) the HD with all my media (I had unhooked all of them prior to trying the Vista Install to minimize potential "issues" ... so much for that theory, eh?).

Well, while Vista was installing it has a message across the top of the screen that said "Your system will reboot several times during the install" (or something to that effect) and only rebooted itself once. On my previous install attempts, after the install hung I'd hit the reset button to reboot but the Vista never did anything except fail... As it is, you're right. I don't think I should ask too many questions as long as it's working (When it comes down to the bottom line all I really need is for this to hold me through until Windows7 is released), but I don't know if I can resist the urge... I'm the curious sort.

Like you, I've never played with a Dual OS... and I wasn't looking for a Dual OS, but I think it'll come in handy while transitioning things over... incase I miss something or (for whatever reason) something doesn't want to install properly at least I'll still have it elsewhere.

As for the interesting issues, Thanks! (I do try to avoid the mundane and boring ;) )

Thanks again (I'll keep you updated on how things go)

If you want, check this out... Win7 Beta

It might still be available. I don't know. I can't risk it with only one computer right now.
The economy is putting a cramp on my computer fun.
