I have noticed people around getting annoyed by HP's Quickplay buttons on their laptops, due to the fact that quickplay is not very quick, and the buttons can be accidentally pushed while typing, or by someone else who is a pain. Here's how to turn off the quick play feature: (note: Quick play can still be used, through the start menu, autoplay or in program files)

1) Run msconfig
2) Under startup, there are two items, one called HP QuickPlay, the other called HP Quick launch buttons. I think it depends on the model you have, but for me i needed to disable both of these from starting up. If you have other buttons, such as play, stop, FF, mute etc, these will not be affected as these are system buttons.
3) The buttons will still beep if you push them, so if you want to turn this feature off, you can simply just restart and go through the BIOS, where there is a feature to turn off the sound for buttons.

Hope this can retain some people's sanity!

Hi,

I own a hp pavilion dv6543ev. I had no problems with QuickPlay until I noticed that QuickPlay buttons didn't beep anymore. I went through BIOS but the feature for turning off the sound for buttons was disabled.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Yes it did. The weird thing is that I reinstalled the same driver. No update or a different version. :S

Thanks again!

I have just re-installed my windows because my wireless drivers were distroyed during a windows update. i reinstalled windows and installed vista, vista would not let me do an upgrade so have to do a custom install which meant a fresh install and loss of all programs and files. so now i have lost everything. how to a get the quickplay buttons working. when i press the dvd or quickplay button nothing happens and when i mute the color no longer changes either.. strange?

I have a similar problem, I accidently press some buttons, like the volume and its a nuisance. I really hate these buttons and want to disable them .... but there is no option to do so!! Tried to unisntall the HP Quick Buttons software, but not helps either.

Can anyone help disable the buttons? Maybe something can be changed in the registery (say, changing the button keys to zero 000000000000). Anyone help?

Update:

I have tried searching the registry for anything QLB-related, but only found following two locations:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Software Explorers\Disabled RunKey\Run
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-239277579-2818820354-3002204094-1006\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel

These are just Disabled or Adjusted properties, and probably of no use. So to me it appears that there is nothing I can do using registry.

Tried searching the hard drive for "qlb" or "quick launch", but apart from some folders and system log files, also little help (There were two folders "QLB" and "QLBTEMP" in C:/SWSetup. I tried removing these folders, and restarting computer, but QL buttons still work)

One more idea I had was to disable the keys through registry. Some time ago I succeded in disabling the Caps Lock key, using the following procedure:

Go to Start → Run → regedit
Go to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout
Right-click on the right half of the screen and choose New → Binary
Name the new Value Scancode Map
Enter 00000000000000000200000000003A0000000000
Close the "Registry Editor" by selecting "Exit" from the "File" menu.
Reboot.

The "3A" in above code it hexadecimal (Scan Code) referring to the Caps Lock. So my idea was to use corresponding hexadecimals for QL buttons, to disable them. To find the hexadecimals I used KeyView program (http://www.cgl.ucsf.edu/home/t.....eyview.exe). I found following Scan Codes for the QL buttons (left to right)

Decimal: 89, 8, 32, 46, 48 (all except bluetooth button)
Hex: 59, 8, 20, 2e, 30

However, there are overlaps with my existing keyboard buttons:

8 - overlaps with "7"
32 - overlaps with "d"
46 - overlaps with "c"
48 - overlaps with "b"

So clearly there are problems using this method. The KeyView program picks up the QL buttons having same Scan Codes as some existing buttons, so I doubt I can disable QL buttons like this.

I'm not sure what else to try ... may be the only solution is to go to a computer shop and ask them to open up my laptop and unplug the QLB bar.

Too bad HP made so difficult to customise its product.

Well my method stops quickplay from launching, but the other buttons (back, forward, stop, play, mute and volume) will still work as they are system buttons. Personally i find them handy, seeing as 1) i never use the next/stop etc buttons for anything, so it doesnt matter if i push them, and 2) muting and unmuting via the QL buttons is much faster than the manual way.

And as they are system buttons, they must be configurable by the registry, similar to the caps lock thing that you tried. Unfortunately i am not good with the registry, so i can't help you there. Though i am sure someone here will be able to help! Which buttons exactly did you want disabled?

I guess you could just remap 8 to 7, 32 to d etc... Though that would have the interesting side effect of pushing the unmute button and ending up typing a "b" or something!

And yeah, HP made their buttons difficult to customise because they wanted people using their QP software!

I have been struggling with an issue with the Mute button on my Quick Play bar. Here are my vitals:

HP Pavilion dv9723cl
Windows Vista

The mute button is permanently showing red and no sound is coming from my laptop. when I press the mute button, the sound icon in the taskbar appears to unmute/mute at will, but the Quick Play button remains red and the system is muted.

This happened once before about 2 weeks after I bought the machine and tech support had me restore the system to facotry install. It has been about 1 month and the same issue has occurred. I have tried countless things to resolve it but I am at a loss.

I have searched and I appear to be the only one experiencing this issue. Does anyone know of a fix for this?

Thanks.

@Dips & Balonzo
restart your computers, because that has worked for me whenever my quick play buttons were not working

@balonzo - I guess you have tried system restore?

Just wanted to say I Googled "disable hp quickplay" and this was the first result. I haven't restarted yet but I would think it'd work. Thanks so very much!

Oh man this is so helpful. I am always hitting that button and it got so annoying.

By the way, if you want to get rid of those programs without having to restart (the first time), you can go to the processes in task manager and end the processes "QLBCTRL.exe" and "QPSERVICE.exe". After changing msconfig, they won't start up any more when you restart, but this is how to get rid of them before restart as well.

Thanks for mentioning this.

Glad to see it was helpful to everyone! It sure was for me!

@Balonzo - That is a very weird issue indeed! I would advise checking your BIOS version, and upgrading/downgrading as necessary.

Dear Anyone!

I've had an hp dv6000 laptop (XP) for about a year and a half; it's been a love-hate affair. Most recently the power button has stopped working completely (note the warranty is also conveniently up). The only chance I have of starting it when it does turn off is that little quick play button (who woulda thought the thing could ever be useful???) I've pushed it accidental more times than I care to recall and have been annoyed by it since day 1. Now I'm hoping it can be my new best friend. Is there anyway I can code the thing to act like a power button? I.e. to boot directly into windows (I'm using XP)? At the moment the best I can get is to turn it on and hit ESC and do a CD boot into recovery mode before being able to "restart" into windows. It's a bit awkward.

Your help and any relevant links are appreciated!
