My notebook has power, you can hear the wheels turning, however, the monitor is black. I can't tell if it is actually booting up or just spinning its wheels.

Will doing a full system recover work--I'll have to purchase the software. But, will it do me any good since I have no command/control over the notebook?

Hi BoxofRocks. The 1st thing to try is,
Shut down the computer. Unplug everything. Remove the battery. Wait 30 minutes. Put battery back in. Start computer.

If you can borrow an XP disk, and run a Repair, try that.
Or to just test the computer, try a Linux Live CD. More info here,
