HP Media Center PC, CD-ROM Creator

When I try to create a CD-ROM, a pop-up appears asking me to insert a disk. A clean disk is already there, so I reinsert it, but the same pop-up keeps appearing.

When I check the "Properties" on the mouse right key, it says the disk (both CD-R and CD-RW) say the disk is full. The disk is magenta, meaning no room is left (even when I put in a new, empty, disk)..

I’ve tried Sonic Digital/Media Plus (which comes with the computer) and dragging the file to the CD-ROM disk in the OS … but with no positive results.

I cannot burn any disks from ANY C: file, but can read other pre-created disks.

Disk drive is E. Operating system is XP.

Any suggestions or ideas?

ecargile,

Welcome to The HTG Forums.
Ensure you using a Good Brand of CD Media.
Quality varies widely.
Also ensure you have all HP Machine Device Drivers Updated plus your Bios and Including the Latest Version Release of the Creator Program Software.
Try burning after doing the maintenance.
------------------
If this does not work, Download and Install FREE Imgburn software.

What happens when you try to use this program to burn ??
Post Back as to Results.

Thanks for the response and good guidance.

1.In trying to make CDs from a file, I have tried Memorex CD-R and Memorex High Speed CD-RW with the same results ... a pop-up window that tells me to load a disk (which I have done). In reading the "Properties" of my mouse right-click, both say that the disks are full (when they are brand new), show a "magenta" disk (meaning they are full), but give the content as "zero". Am I doing something wrong?

Even though I've tried several new disks, I get the same results. Is Memorex a good brand?

Your suggestions make sure I have the HP Machine Device Drivers Updated and the Bios (including the Latest Versions)?

I've tried the two different programs to create CDs and the one you recommended (ImgBurn). None of the programs seem to work.

Spending a lot of time with ImgBurn, I have been able to download this program. But the "Help" button didn't tell me much in how to operate the program. Fortunately the "Guides" did list several files tell me how to use the program, including several neat files and operating manuals on how to use the program. I am wading through them now. "Lightning UK!" seems to have a good handle on this program. This program (once I learn how to use it) looks very good. Thanks for recommending it. I'll give you some feedback on my use of it.

ecargile,
Sorry for the delay in answering your post but had ISP problems most of the day.
From I what you say, you now have tried (2) CD burning programs and are using brand new quality media but your machine refuses to acknowledge new CD blanks. I ran into the same problem several months with an older Plextor Burner. Unfortunately after taking the old burner apart, found the hardware had failed. Since your machine is new, suggest calling HP, discussing the problem with them and asking for an in-warranty exchange of the burner. They may want you to send the machine back for service, but think that you could probably install a new burner if they will let you. Please Post Back as to the Results of Calling HP Warranty Support.
Kindest Regards,

Thanks for your response and relating a similar problem you had.

Unfortunately, the computer is two years old and out of warranty. I did not try to make a CD or DVD until after a year since I bought the machine new. Since that time I have never been able to make either a CD or DVD. This has been a long-term problem.

I will try calling HP and arm-wrestle them into sending me a new burner. I understand your point about sending the entire machine versus just exchanging the burner myself (which I'll try). After talking to them, I will send you some feedback.

Your help and guidance has been very beneficial to me. I was thinking it was me, ... which it may still be my fault. "A machine is only as good as the operator."

ecargile,

Sorry to hear about the out of date warranty.
It was a bit easier for me to determine if I had software or hardware burner issue as I have spare burners and meter equipment.
As I've said, since you have tried to use (2) software programs plus have good blank media CDs, I'm betting on a hardware issue.

ecargile, hello. What is the make and model of the DVD writer? You can find this in the Device Manager, though it might be just a cryptic model number. If there is a firmware update available, that might help.

Next, I want you to try some tools designed to gather information from optical drives. DVD Identifier is freeware that reads information about the drive and the media in it. See if it will give you information about the capabilities of your drive and see if it can read the media information. You can also try DVD Info Pro, which is shareware but comes in a trial version. Get the trial version and see what information it will display about the drive and the media.

As for Memorex, or any other brand, there is no telling whether it's good or bad. There are only a few companies that actually produce blank media and most big name companies just rebrand the media. So, while the package says "Memorex", the media is made by someone else. What's more important is whether that particular media works in your particular drive. To help track such things, people share their experiences at videohelp.com:

haphoenix and ScottW:

I appreciate all the help I can get (as I desperately need help).

1.Part of the feedback that everyone can learn from, I did get in touch with HP. As I suspected, my computer is out of warranty and they want an absorbent amount for a third extention on the warranty insurance (I've already paid them for a second warranty insurance, which has also expired. They don't make things like they use to ... to last. It's almost cheaper to get a new computer, but I have all the data to transfer.

HP did suggest I go to their help website, which I did. After considerable rummaging around, I found the following message, which relates directly to my problem.

***************
HP Recording Software.
CD Recording Software
Roxio, Inc.

Issue Description:

A CD-recording driver is installed that might cause stability problems, including problems shutting down and problems using a CD/DVD drive. This driver will be disabled.
This driver might have been installed by Easy CD Creator, Windows Media Player or RealJukebox. You might not be able to record CDs until you obtain compatible drivers.

Roxio, Inc. provides an update for Easy CD Creator users at the Easy CD Creator Updates Web site.

ScottW, thanks for the insight about the CD/DVD manufacturer and suggestions of how I can find the needed info. I will pursue all of your recommendations and get back to you.

For Windows Media Player users, see the Microsoft Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/windo.....roxio.asp.

For RealJukebox users, see the RealNetworks Web site at http://switchboard.real.com/rj2/?cd=xpfix.

Contact Information:

Roxio Support Web site (English): http://www.roxio.com/support
Roxio Support Web site (Japan): http://www.roxio.co.jp/support
Telephone: (408) 945-8600 (North America only)

******************

I found this very interesting. Obviously, several other people have experienced the same problem I am having. So they know about the problem, but want more money to fix it. I will follow up on each of their recommendations and let you know what I find.

Do either of you find this interesting or have any suggestions for me?

I will pursue the hardware and software angles, then pass this info back to you.

ScottW:

Your info about CD/DVD manufacturing is insightful. I will follow up on the needed info and get back to you. Your guidance on how to find the info was very helpful, as I did not know this.

Both:

In addition to assisting me wade through the wealth of knowledge needed to find and correct problems, hopefully my feedback may help you and others.

ecargile, the information from HP is helpful. They talk about "CD recording" software, or packet writing software, and I have seen this kind of software cause many problems with drive access. If you have any such software, try uninstalling it. It is quite common for some of the software burning suites to come with packet writing software that is enabled by default.
