No spec, but since this is an HP, you might be out of luck totally.

Most large vendor PC's, Dell, HP, Sony, etc. use proprietary motherboards. That mean they build them (or someone builds them for them) and they are NOT standard. Backplane is non-standard and cases are custom. Mounts could be too.

Why does this matter, motherboards contain chips and sockets. The socket will determine which CPU you can install and the chipset on the motherboard limits the ones you can put it. Voltages too could be different.

Just going from ATOM to INTEL would require a change in the motherboard, possibly the power supply too, but you probably can't get a motherboard that would fit in the HP. Memory might be needed new as well.

Suggest you retire the HP and get a new computer if you can't replace the motherboard.

You won't be able to install an Intel processor on your AMD board, and the fastest socket 939 chip is the FX-60. Having said that it is an old socket and you may well find that an FX-60 cpu is an uneconomic upgrade. If you are looking at improving your system for video editing then adding RAM is your best option - check the Crucial website for their scanner & that will tell you what you can add and the cost.

The 3800+ uses an AM2 socket. You could upgrade to a 5600+ which runs at 2.8GHz - but that's the fastest with an AM2 socket. The thing is relatively expensive and I am not sure whether it is worth it. http://www.amazon.com/AMD-Athl.....B000MNA082

Last year I upgraded a 4800+ to a 5600+ which cost $50 at the time. But I did not really see much of a difference. I only did it because the 5600+ was given to me.

This is all immaterial. Read my original comments. Motherboards on most Vendor machines, Dell, HP, Sony, Gateway, to name a few are usually PROPRIETARY. Non-standard backplanes (where the cards go) and ports. You can't replace the motherboard as the case will get in the way. Some internal connectors can be proprietary as well. To do what you want at a minimum you'll need to replace the CPU and probably heatsink, memory, motherboard, and most likely the case. Not something that would be economical.

First I'd contact HP support and ASK if the motherboard is standard, or buy one you can return and take a look for yourself. Odds are you can't do that.

Irv S. is Absolutely Correct Above.

That's why many folks choose to Build their own systems.

But he can upgrade the CPU - if he sticks with AMD.

Yes Bill, but as OldGeezer said " the fastest socket 939 chip is the FX-60. Having said that it is an old socket and you may well find that an FX-60 cpu is an uneconomic upgrade."

Time for a new computer if one really wants a true upgrade.

I'm guessing the system didn't come with Win7 Enterprise? In which case it would be worth installing the 64bit version (which should use the same key), then you can get past the 4Gb RAM limit.

Irv, I don't know how you guys get to a 939 socket. He has a 3800+ now which has an AM2 socket.

Sorry, I just copied what I saw, didn't look any further.

Still, anything but a CPU that fits in the SAME socket and motherboard is big time dollar upgrades.

It is big time dollars now - I guess because it is old and rare. When I got the 5600+, it was only $50.

@djhull3917, It's not that your post (Thread) is popular. The members here take the help they try to give seriously and discussions which sometimes seem to be among themselves, is to ultimately give the best answer to your problem or question.
