Maybe stating the obvious, but few phones are compatible with all SIM's After unlocking, most phones will be compatible with either CDMA or GSM system -- but rarely both.

As for unlocking, wait until your contract has expired (unless you want to pay the exorbitant termination fee) and call your phone company for unlock code and instructions. Alternatively, if you google around, there are any number of outfits that will sell you the code and instructions -- but this is illegal nowadays.

I have found it easy to get a phone on contract unlocked.
Simply advise your provider that you are taking an overseas trip and need the phone unlocked so you can use a pre=paid sim in the country you are travelling to!
