Hi, Goldie! TrueCrypt is a terrific free, open-source program that can encrypt folders or entire drives. Because encryption requires a password, it locks out access to anyone who doesn't have the password. However, TrueCrypt does not provide password protection *without* encryption.

If all you need is password protection, you could try Folder Lock, which is NOT free. Be sure to get the trial version for testing if you want to try Folder Lock.

A program such as folder lock will prevent the casual intruder and the lazy hacker. However, a determined hacker will still be able to view your files. Using TrueCrypt, even if the data is captured, it's virtually impossible to crack the encryption. Encrypting and decrypting files will cause a slight reduction in file access time, but TrueCrypt is very efficient.

I would be extremely wary of using 3rd party programs to lock down drives.

Windows Vista has the ability to encrypt volumes all on it's own, so that only the user that encrypted them can read the data. This is a feature of the NTFS file system.

Goldie, I do agree with JonMCC33. If you have Vista Ultimate, it would be better to use the built-in features, Encrypting File System and/or BitLocker Drive Encryption. Of course, that assumes that you want encryption and not just an easy lockout mechanism.

That's why LH asked what version of Vista you have because if you have Vista Ultimate, those features are included; if you don't have Ultimate, these features are not relevant to your question.

TrueCrypt has a pretty nice tutorial on their webpage with screenshots and step-by-step instructions:
http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/tutorial.php

If you want to just test the waters, you can run TrueCrypt as a portable application -- without installing it. A good way to play with the features is to create a small encrypted volume, on a USB flash drive if available, and put a copy of some non-critical files in it. Instructions on how to run TrueCrypt without installing are here:

@0zSpitt:
To use Encyption in Windows Vista you need Enterprise, Business or Ultimate.
For whole drive encyption you need to reconfigure the drive partitions and also have a TPM chip in the machine.
For per folder or file encyption just right click on a file or folder, click Advanced, select Encyption, click ok and ok.
