After recently purchasing a brand new HP Pavillion laptop with 64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium - I noticed I am unable to use a certain vital piece of software. I was informed by the software developer that I need to have a 32-bit Vista installation instead of my current 64-bit install.

My problem is... Everywhere I read, people say to use the system CD and just swap it out. The HP Pavillion does not come with any system CDs because they are loaded onto the systems automatically.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to switch down to 32-bit Windows Vista?

This was another arrogant booboo by Microsoft. Transparent backward compatibility should be a given for at least three iterations of an operating system. I don't know the answer to your question, but I hope someone does, because I have a friend who recently bought a 64-bit and is having exactly the same problem. You are not alone. Is it any wonder that MS is reportedly the most hated company in the world?

I know somebody is probably going to come on and declare that the problem is the developers' fault. Developers use the system as MS presents it. It is MS's responsibility to not render users' software obsolete.

HP does not provide separate system disks, there is a 'Recovery Partition', should be the D: drive. Look at the documentation that came with your system and you will find an instruction set on how to burn a recovery set to DVD/CD (these will return the system to the fresh out of the box state). They typically require 2 DVD's or 12 CD's to make the set. I do not know if these disks have both the 32 and 64 bit versions of the OS. Also, make sure that you have all of your programs and data off the PC and ready to reload, my previous experience with such system disks it that they are pretty much a Format and Re-install process, so be ready.

HP also does not provide hard copy of the documentation with some computers. I recently discovered the User's Manual in the program listing of the Start menu.

What software is it that doesn't run? I've not come across many pieces of software that don't work in 64-bit.

It's an insurance agency management software called "Doris". The program itself works fine, but the import and export features (which are probably the most important features) are what seem to be having problems in a 64-bit environment.

Thanks everyone, I will report back after trying a few of the recommendations above. If you have anything else to add - please do. I will be checking this periodically throughout the day.

I checked with my friend about his problems and he said he was having trouble with a propietary network scheduling program that involves a lot of logical calculations and printouts of charts and activities. He has his programmer working on it now.

In case anyone was wondering the outcome of this post, I will share what I did.

I went to Amazon.com (Newegg had the same price) and bought an OEM Computer Builder Version of Microsoft Windows Vista Business 32-bit. After backing up what I needed, I put the CD in and restarted the computer. Then, simply went through the installation process after booting to the CD.

During the installation, just format the existing partition(s) and then pick the partition you want to install Vista Business 32-bit on.

On the HP Entertainment PC I was working with, I had to download almost all the drivers from HP.com because they don't offer system CD's anymore (they rely on the "recovery" partition, which I just so happen to remove). Oops. ;D
The first driver to install should always be the Ethernet (NIC) drivers, because then you can connect to the internet on that computer and download the rest. I recommend downloading the video card drivers next to get your screen resolutions back to normal.

After that, just keep going down the driver list until you have everything. Now you are successfully downgraded to Windows Vista Business 32-bit.

Good luck!
