How do I close a start-up program?

I am trying to install Dragon 12 speech recognition. It instructs me to close all open programs and especially my antivirus program before installing.

I know it is simple, but I don't remember how (I am almost 84 years of age).

Click on the red X on the top right of each program.

For Antivirus you might need to right click the icon in the taskbar (near the clock) and disable the protection.
Most of them will offer to disable for a few minutes, until next reboot or until you re-enable it manually.

Usually I do not worry about Items in the task bar when I get such a request. I just clear the desktop itself.

right click icon taskbar and disable the protection , enjoy it !
