how come i have 8 svchost.exe in my taskmanager?

but see sometimes there are viruses that disguise them selves as these and then they are really hard to figure out since you think that they are part of windows

@jack: For that it helps to use Process Explorer. You can goto the properties of a process in it and find out where it's located and other information.

@windburst29, I hope you were only joking about stopping the svchost processes. Don't - that can be very unhealthy.

I think a good rule of thumb is if you don't know what something is or what it does, leave it alone.

There is one virus that tries to hide itself as a fake svchost.exe process, but any of the anti-spyware applications should be able to remove it.

So if you've run a scan for spyware, then most likely the process is a valid part of windows. The article linked above by Lighthouse will help understand what the valid processes are doing.
