Hi,
I have built a website and it is currently on the Internet. However, I think that it is costing the company too much for the hosting, despite the tech support.
I would like to be able to host the site myself. I have access to a pc that I can leave running 24/7, with the odd downtime for maintainance and editing etc.
Anyone know just exactly what I will need in order to do it all myself?
Thank you for your time,

Hosting a website
(6 posts)The easiest way to get a webserver with as little hassle as possible would be WAMP (Windows Apache MySQL PHP), assuming the website is built using PHP. This is run in your windows environment, so this is the easiest way for the typical user to set up a server on a local pc.

The best way, would be to install a Linux distro, and install Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc. This is a more stable system (since you don't run the server inside windows), but Linux experience is probably required for this.
Ah!
I have no experience of Linux at all but since you think this is the best way to go about things, then I will certainly look into it over the weekend. Should I opt for this method, my only outgoings would be the cost of the domain then, would it? I understand Linux and WAMP are both free distributions, is this true? Is there a Linux distro that is perhaps easier to learn than another, but that would still do the job?
Thank you most kindly for your prompt and useful response. It is greatly appreciated.
