You'll need to assign a static IP address to the printer but leave out the gateway address. For example....

My network gateway is 192.168.1.1
My computer is 192.168.1.50

I would assign the printer an IP address of 192.168.1.200 but leave the gateway address blank.

You would then need to install the printer driver software on the computer and have it search for the printer at the address 192.168.1.200 or manually create a TCP printing port.

what make is the multifunction printer? Because if its a HP then ive found that the HP install network printer wizard is VERY useful which can be found on HP's website (hey it might work for other models too why not try it and if so post back telling me the results)

The following link might just come up as text, if so just copy paste the link into your web browser (without the '===HP=WEBSITE===' thing)
===HP=WEBSITE===
