What is the hibernation file all about?I've been informed by using the disk cleanup tool you can clean up or disable the file. I don't even see where this is. Am I at the right place? I right click the C drive, properties, etc.Nothing at this place about the hibernation. I guess I missed this one!

@AST, using the disk cleanup tool, you can delete the hibernation file, hiberfil.sys, which also disables hibernation. This frees up hard drive space but not system memory. If you have more questions about this, please start a new topic.

@LH, I couldnt' have said it better myself! :)

@AST, hibernation is a feature of Windows that puts the system into a deep sleep mode and saves the contents of RAM to the hard drive. This is also called suspend-to-disk in other operating systems. In Windows, the RAM data is written to a hidden, system file called hiberfil.sys that is kept in the root of the C:\ drive. Since it must contain the contents of RAM, this file is usually the size of the RAM in the system. If you have 2 GB of memory, it's a 2 GB file and if you have 8 GB of memory, it could be an 8 GB file! The Disk Cleanup utility allows folks who aren't using the feature to reclaim the hard disk space, but it also disables hibernation.

When I run disk cleanup ,Hibernation is not even there. That's why I'm spacing out on this issue, however I know it used to be there. I know I've seen it before, but it's not even grayed out, just not there!

AST, your hibernation feature is probably turned off. When that is the case, the Disk Cleanup utility does not show the hibernation file cleaner option because there is nothing to clean!

To re-enable hibernation in Vista, you can run the command "powercfg /hibernate on" from an elevated command prompt. See the instructions here.

Thanks Scott I got it back! Does it disappear every time you run disk cleanup? I have about 2 gig in the hibernation file with a 350gig hard drive.I'm not too woried about a space issue, but what is in these files, just the settings when it goes in the hibernate mode? Just more of a learning thing versus a problem thing.

AST, you probably have 2 GB of RAM installed in your system since your hibernation file is 2 GB in size. There is just one file, hiberfil.sys, and it contains the contents of RAM at the time the system was hibernated.

The Disk Cleanup utility will only show the Hibernation File Cleaner option when hibernation is enabled. If you check the option and run the cleanup, hibernation will be disabled and the option will not show up the next time. If you want to have Hibernation available, then don't check the Hibernation File Cleaner option in Disk Cleanup and it will show up the next time.
