Just received my brand new Lenovo Think-Pad with Vista Ultimate loaded.
Can anyone recommend a good, economical security suite?
I don't mind paying for this at all, provided it does it's job.
Currently running Kapersky on my existing notebook, it's been OK
Trying to avoid Norton, McAfee is definety out, (due to earlier headaches))
Thanks in advance!

(15 posts)Here is the latest rating that came out after the discussion that Scott has posted. Although it is from a German mag and in German, you'll be able to figure out the rankings in the tables. I really am a Kaspersky fan but Norton actually came out pretty high on the list. I understand they made a lot of progress for their 2008 edition. I agree with you on McAfee, that sucks. I got rid of it too. And they still owe me a $60 rebate that I am waiting for since 6 months. But as Scott once said, it's like your preference for beer. One day one is ahead, the next day another. BitDefender that usually also comes away pretty good is warned against (at least in German circles) because apparently it itself could be the gateway for malware. They seem to have a hole in their own product where the bad guys can slip in. It was interesting to learn that the security suites can be a security risk themselves - and not only BitDefender. There were some others too that I forgot.
My personal fav is AVG. you can get the free version or go with the paid anti-virus + anti-malware. http://www1.grisoft.com/doc/pr.....e/us/crp/2 . its only $45 for two years. it uses very little system resources as well.
Hello,
I work as an employee inside BitDefender and the howtogeek is one of the main how-to blog/site that I go to every time I have the chance. I decided to do an account on the forum because some of the the things are untrue.
All that I would like to say is that BitDefender hasn't got any problems regarding any security holes. On blog.chip.de the comments are pointing only at problems that are regarding our Online scanner.
The security hole in Online Scanner where really there and they have been resolved in a couple of hours so there are no problems anymore.
I use Symantec Corporate AntiVirus and Zone Alarm Pro. I also use Ccleaner, Spybot S&D and Adaware SE once a week. No malware problems here, but i notice ZA slows down the launching of applications....such as Firefox. I use Symantec Endpoint on another pc and just started runnung Ubuntu on the latop. There is no security software on the Ubuntu laptop yet.
There's no problem about that I just wanted to let everybody know :p
Here's the vulnerability: http://www.securityfocus.com/a.....0/threaded and there's an answer also lower on that page.
@InDiSent Many people consider that antivirus isn't a must for new users on linux. I wouldn't really know that because I'm not a Linux "freak".
But there are lots of antivirus products on the market, Bitdefender also has one. Check it out here: http://www.bitdefender.com/PRO.....nices.html
@InDiSent I am with you, Spybot, CCleaner are excellent. I run them once a week too (if Spybot only would not need so long to get going). AdAware I used to run but it never really found anything. Another one I think is useful is WinPatrol. It keeps an eye on bad cookies and is also useful for all kinds of other purposes. Plus they have a very nice tutorial to help you understand all it's functions.

May be a little late for you, but here is my opinion.
I used to use Symantec SystemWorks, Anti-Virus and ZoneAlarm [for firewall.]
But the last five years I have used ONLY ZoneAlarm. For $30 they give you anti-virus and a firewall. Their products are very good, IMHO. And they don't slow down your computer.
I too just bought a Lenovo notebook, that is loaded with Vista Home Premium. If you are curious, a Lenovo IdeaPad Y510. A great deal, it was. Got it for $600 after $200 rebates. Specs are 250 GB hard disk, 256 MB video, 2 GB RAM, 15.1 16:9 TFT display, 5.1 surround, dual layer DVD-RW, three USB 2.0 ports, built-in 7 card reader, built-in web cam, etc.
First thing I did was uninstall Norton that had the free six month trial. Then had to go to ZoneAlarm's site to get a Vista version of my software [which was free, by the way.]
Installed it and it's working fine. Anti-virus and firewall, for $30. Can't get better than that.
My first post, so pardon if the URL below does not work as a clickable link. I'm too lame to know what the webmaster means by "put code in between 'backticks'" :)
Oh, I forgot, the other security software I use [this after 12 years on the Net, so take my opinion for what it is worth]:
Like others, I use CCleaner, which used to be called "Crap Cleaner" until they got famous. It clears out temp files, cookies, cache, etc. It's a free download.
Also I use AdAware, the free version, to clean up stubborn cookies or installed spyware.
So with ZoneAlarm anti-virus, firewall, CCleaner and AdAware I feel pretty protected.
WHS... I used to use that, but between CCleaner, AdAware and ZoneAlarm, anything else would be overkill [and many times slow down my "net connection" because there's too many programs protecting me, so to speak.]
ZoneAlarm protects against Trojans and spyware, so I run CCleaner and AdAware every morning to clean out my system because ZoneAlarm does not have cleaning functions.
OK, got you. I use Kaspersky. Spybot once a day as you said and for watching my registry, CCleaner for the registry and the other junk once a week or so - but not cookies. Those I clean by hand. Don't want to logon to all those websites after all cookies are gone. Additionally I have WinPatrol running.
@MichaelSF: The code between backticks is referring to a shortcut for the code element. You can still use the a element, url bbcode element or just type a url in and it automatically turn into a link. It needs to start to HTTP:// first though as the link won't work otherwise.
On the code element it is used to display program code like < code > dosomething(); </ code > (without the extra spaces) and the shortcut is like 'dosomething();'.
The shortcut doesn't work right now though.
