Help What is the best and most efficient way for compressing and storing

Hi Guys,
I have a external hard drive, actually 2 of them and I really want to know something. I want to take allot of these huge files that are very important to me and yet I dont use them unless it is an emergency. So, I was going to take all that stuff plus alot of other crap and compress it and store it on some dvd's maybe? See this is where I get confused what would be the best and most efficient way to backup files and things that are extremly important to you and cannot risk loosing or corrupting in any way? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

The external hard drives. Copy them to there. Or burn them to a DVD.
