I am trying to connect an external keyboard to my laptop. It is an older laptop that has a PS/2 connection. I bought a PS/2 to USB adapter but when I plug it into my laptop the computer says that the driver was not properly installed. I know the keyboard works. I just don't know how to get it to work on my laptop. I have tried troubleshooting and searching google for the last hour or so and no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am running Windows 7 on a Dell XPS M1330

hi Caldog7, you might have to go into your BIOS and see if you have a setting that allows what you are trying to do. You might have an incompatability issue with the PS2 /USB connector. Read this, it might clear things up a bit.

Thanks for that. I have a feeling it might be a compatibility issue. I have no idea how to fix that or if it is even possible. What would I be looking for in my bios? I also just discovered an interesting symptom. The driver is installed and is "working properly" but, when I push any button on the keyboard it makes the little disconnect sound then reconnects a few seconds later.

Caldog7,
---
Some USB keyboards will not work with a PS2 connection.
---
Maybe try to find a real PS2 keyboard.

I agree with what Rick had to say. I have four key boards. Two will work only with PS/2 (both antiques but still work well), one will work only with USB and one will work with both.

Logitech sells some combo keyboard mouse packages that utilize USB. I have the MX Revolution 5500 combo. Used ONE USE 'device' which is then converted to BlueTooth. Works fine on my desktop.

Check this LINK for some that might work for you?
