the short version is that i have

AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual processor 4200+
2.2 ghz 1.93 gb ram

when i right click properties i have 33.9GB used and 264GB available
memory was added a long time ago
i never learned how to tell the computer to use more memory for RAM

I have found system properties, advanced, performance-visual effects, advanced, virtual memory

this is where I THINK I should tell my computer I want 8 GB of RAM used out of my avail memory.

I need 8 to run the set of programs i need to start working with. yesterday :(
I also need to make my XP into Windows 7.

Ultimately what i need is my xp to be a 7
my ram to be 8 with 50gb free space for use
64bit

so far i have figured out i need to clean install... i thik
i have saved everything to my portable harddrive
no clue where my xp start ups are but since i need 7 i dont know if i need them anyway.

i have hacked at my cmputer for 2 days. i need help

...crap soooo the max size is 4092 right now.... how high can i go? i do have a terabyte portable hard drive. can that be made into ram? i dont care if its ungodly slow, just has to work for a little bit.

You cannot make disk space into RAM. Those are two completely different facilities.

If you are looking to speed up the system, you can put the OS on a SSD - if it is a desktop, in addition to the HDD, if it is a laptop, in lieu of the HDD.

Rick, the confusion comes from the loose usage of the word 'memory'. I have been cruisading for years against the usage of the word memory for disk space.
