I want to create a computer that has a Nvdia geforce 9800 Gx2 graphics card with a geforce 8800GT (SLI) I want a Intel core two extreme QX9770 and 4 gigs of ram, but I don't know what motherboard to get and what soundcard to get. any ideas?

(10 posts)I'm pretty sure you need to have the same GPU's to get SLI to work, but it has been awhile since I've looked into that. A list of newer SLI boards can be found here http://www.newegg.com/Product/.....agesize=50 . You will want to check the performance of SLI to see the rates they will run. Anandtech.com has some good motherboard reviews so they should be able to give you an idea as to what to look for.
EDIT: Most onboard sound is pretty good nowadays, especially on the gamer boards, and give you HD 7.1 surround sound.
I know when they first came out (both sli and crossfire) that you needed identical cards. I know that ATI crossfire can be hybrid, I really don't follow the SLI much myself, but the system will take a performance hit, usually will not get the top speed of the fast card (not sure but it may get reduced to the speed of the slowest card).
Call me crazy, but I think NVidia has the answers about SLI:

From the FAQ there, "SLI technology requires the NVIDIA GPUs to match". Also they have lists of certified cards, power supplies, and motherboards that support SLI. They also have "Hybrid SLI" where a GPU integrated on the motherboard can be paired with a discrete graphics card:
