is there any advantage or disadvantage between a 10,000 rpm hard drive and a 7,500 rpm?

(6 posts)Oz: a 10k RPM hard drive is faster, but generates more heat and more noise. A 7200 RPM drive is not as fast -- but still quite good -- but generates less heat and noise. A 10k RPM drive usually costs more money for the same capacity. The largest capacity drives (1+ TB) are only available in 7200 RPM these days.
All of these factors, and the reliability rating (MTBF), should be taken into account when shopping for new drives.
@0z,

A hard disk drive, commonly referred to as a hard drive, hard disk, or fixed disk drive,[1] is a non-volatile storage device which stores digitally encoded data on rapidly rotating platters with magnetic surfaces. Strictly speaking, "drive" refers to a device distinct from its medium, such as a tape drive and its tape, or a floppy disk drive and its floppy disk. Early HDDs had removable media; however, an HDD today is typically a sealed unit with fixed media.
