BTW. I forked out about £10, to get a one third usage of this program. Is that legal. My friend that bought it, has it on 2 machines. Me on 1?

LH, your friend has violated the EULA which can be found here:
http://www.symantec.com/about/...../index.jsp

Norton Ghost does not seem to come in a 3-user license box the way that Norton AV or IS do. In the EULA, it says:
"You may: A. use one copy of the Software on a single computer."

It's up to the manufacturer if they want to pursue legal remedy, but most of them are willing to overlook an individual using software on multiple systems owned by that individual. However, charging you money for a portion of his product is not something that Symantec would be cool with:
"You may not, nor may you permit any other person to: A. sublicense, rent or lease any portion of the Software;"

I got it in writing from Norton that I can use the license on 3 computers. So I do.

All this talk about Ghost and now I get a newsletter from buy.com. It looks like the price has dropped here in the US. buy.com has Ghost 14 for around $31 and Amazon.com has it for around $41
http://www.buy.com/retail/prod.....caid=17051

For all the lurkers out there who have been waiting for a price drop, it looks like it's a good time to get yours. I wonder if they are clearing out inventory to make room for Ghost 15, or will they call it 16?

OzSpitt, since you like to tinker, I'll give you a hint. Have you ever had any other Symantec software installed on that system?

OzSpitt, what I was suggesting is that you should try the Norton Removal Tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/S.....3108162039

It will removes any traces of corrupted installs or incomplete uninstalls. What problem are you having with Ghost?

it keeps telling me the actions can't be completed. but now it's backing up my files/hard drive. i was hoping for something like symantec restore or dell restore where you hit f8 and it restores the hard drive back to factory settings. but no, there's never been anything from nortons on this computer until now. norton ghost now says 'creating recovery point, 4hours. i picked the slower speed so i could get my online fix in for the evening.

0zSpitt, What really seems to be your problem? If it does not work, there is something screwy in your installation. I suggest you do what ScottW suggested and first remove everything with the Norton removal tool and then do a clean install. There is no reason it should not work. Writing a first checkpoint does take quite some time (it's about 30 to 35 GB'S). But 4 hours is too long.

@whs. I have 18.30GB usage in my C: drive (30GB). My first backup with Ghost was 9.36GB. Is normal?

LH, that sounds just right to me. The C: drive tends to compress well, up to 50%. There are lots of small, compressible files. When backing up music, images, video, and zip files, you will get almost no compression at all.

Thanks ScottW. I only have the OS and about 6 programs installed on the C: drive

Looks right to me too. Mine are more in the 30 to 35GB range (for a base restore point - as you can see in the pic I posted earlier), but I have a lot of stuff on the system. I have 62GB used on my C:\ - so it looks like it compresses to about half the original size.

Thanks guys. I do have a VM there too. Hence the high GB. (and an empty VM would, I presume, compress to virtually zero)
