Right now I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, as Windows 7 doesn't have Windows Movie Maker.
It's replacement, Windows Live Movie Maker, is a complete garbage product with many features (such as timeline) stripped out of it. It almost looks as though it's trying to be Windows Live Photo Gallery for videos or something.

A stand-alone "2.6" version of Windows Movie Maker which is said to work with Win7 does not allow me to import video files and place them on the video track line, it thinks they're audio files. Any older versions of Windows Movie Maker that I can find (e.g. 2.1, 2.0 etc.) are bundled into Windows XP SP3, so I doubt I can access them on Win7...

I've also tried Cyberlink PowerDirector 5 and Sony Vegas 7 for my free video editing needs, but both are slow software with bloated user interfaces that just aren't going to get the job done.

Any suggestions from the audience?

I'd say DVD FLICK, http://www.dvdflick.net/, is what you want. Please note that I can NOT use it on W7 64 bit version, it BSOD's on me. Supposedly this is due to my computer being a DELL and the use of back level IASTOR.SYS, Intel's Matrix Storage manager version Dell installs. I replaced that with the latest Intel release and it didn't fix my problem however.

Use it at your own risk, others have without problems.
