I don't want to see previews of my open programs; the preview is a just visual distraction to me. I have already disabled it by increasing to several minutes the time it takes for the preview pane to open (I did this in the registry). However, sometimes it pops up anyway. Is there a better way to get rid of it?

Getting rid of the taskbar preview pane
(5 posts)Might want to LOOK HERE but it appears with GPEDIT.MSC you can also do it, but that isn't available in HOME editions.
Here is ANOTHER ONE that involves a registry change to do it.

Just FOUND THIS, might just do what you want? I've not tried it though.
