The time has come for bbPress to go away.

In a month or two, we'll be switching away from bbpress and using Discourse, an extremely modern dicussion / forum software with a long list of great features.

I've been working with the Discourse team and have been part of the private Discourse alpha for months now, helping to shape the feature set, and we will have our own privately themed version that fits into the HTG site naturally. We'll also be replacing the comments on the regular articles with Discourse - essentially all discussion on HTG will be going through Discourse.

Just a few features that will help us:

- You can login to Discourse using Twitter, Google, Facebook, etc.
- Creating posts is excellent and easy with their docking post editor with an integrated preview.
- Notifications when mentioned, even email notifications if you want them - which will bring OPs back to respond to their posts, finally.
- You can @mention other forum members to invite them to a thread.
- Moderation tools are based on the community and reputation, and the spammer protection is much stronger.
- There's no more clicking Next Page. Everything is loaded as you scroll.

It will be a huge, enormous change. Many people won't like the change. We'll lose people.

We are switching to Discourse.

Thanks very much for the update and preview of Discourse.

This gives us the opportunity to dip our toes into Discourse and familiarize ourselves with how it works in plenty of time before you make the transition here at HTG.

This way, it will decrease the amount of people who will react with shock and awe, and scream about how they hate the new look, etc.

May I make a humble suggestion that you make your top post here a "Sticky" so more people will see it and be able to explore Discourse and become accustomed to it before the change goes into effect here.

- Howard

Let's enjoy and adapt to change.

The site should still offer the friendly and best advise possible.

Is there any way Responders can know the OP's World Region or Time Zone just so they can know
the Time Difference ??

This would not disclose any personal information but would be helpful.

Will HTG be the first forum on the web to get Discourse?

Everything else in life changes. So too it must be for HTG. Sometimes we get set in our ways and dislike something because it is "different" without ever giving it a fair chance. This HTG change will elicit responses not unlike every new OS version that comes along. Just as the OS versions are here to stay so is HTG. Adapt people and you will be better off for it.

Um... Will one still be able to log in directly without having to use Twitter, Google, Facebook, etc? I don't use any of those (nor will I).
