it's because the square root of -1 is an invalid number so you wouldn't be able to see it.

It's an imaginary number, not an "invalid" one. See, the cartoon is even funnier that way but only to people who have taken a lot of math class.

It took me a minute when I first saw that picture but I figured out it was the invisible number too.
Though I'm still missing the part of the joke of how the 8 can see the invisible number but the 2 and 3 can't. It seems like they both wouldn't be able to it.

u havent seen it before because it came out today! (i can never miss them because i have it as in my homepage tabs)
jack, if ur gonna make it ur homepage, you have to fiddle with it slightly, coz the newest picture on the website is www.(whatever the website is)/1219 (number)
however,
if u type: www.(website)/new it will always work
to cut a long story short, go onto ur internet options, click on the homepage bit and copy in this: http://www.explosm.net/comics/new/
if u just put this in address bar, load up page and then click homepage thing, it wont work!
so copy what i said in instead http://www.explosm.net/comics/new/
