http://www.techsupportalert.co.....ties.htm#2 -- here you have a selection. They are all pretty good.

Edit. You can get the Kaspersky Internet Security for free (Rebates) from Office Depot. This offering is valid for 1 week starting 5/20. The license can be applied to 3 PC's. This is an excellent security suite.

All you need is a pair of scissors. Find the cable that runs from your computer to the Internet. Cut it. You are now safe from viruses and it's free! Enjoy. jk.

@Scott: VERY FUNNY!!! XD (Seriously, I'not being sarcastic!)

@vgbeckham: AVG is one of the best free antiviruses (of couse I said ONE of them... it doesnt do miracles either! if you mess with really evil viruses it wont be able to help; always remember to be careful and scan whatever you download and take care of whatever you install!) Kaspersky is really good but is paid (I didnt know there was the "free"option but if there is I will try it myself hehe!)

Oh, I just remembered that we discussed this recently in this thread:
http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/norton

Of special interest to me is the comparisons of AV software on the 2nd page, such as the table posted by whs and the links from wikipedia. Since the question was about "really good" AV, the answer can be found in that thread. Keep in mind, however, that most of those are not free versions, but many of those companies make a free version.

I've tried a few freebies and you know what,? don't expect anything for nothing, you get what you pay for, bottom line period. If your good at formatting and reinstalling OS'S go for it,if not you'll learn. I do like the scissor deal.

sparky, I'd like to know what applications gave you trouble. I wouldn't want to recommend something that has known problems. Did you have one that caused you to format and reinstall? Was that because of the application itself or it's inability to stop some malware?

I think we should name names here.

Ok,my previous post had a lot of truth,as far as having virus problems on my own machines,NO way. Haven't had a problem since my 1st year in computer land, received my 1st bug from a borrowed floppy disk. All I was saying is,that my room mate used a freebie and I have no idea of her habits on the net. She drove me nutty enough to where I was tired of being her BUG REMOVAL IDIOT,so I installed Trend Micro,(a good software}.Once Trend expired,I gave Kaspersky a try,and still using it with satisfaction. If I recall, stay away from "Gator",they like to spy, other than that, don't remember.

Oh,by the way,if I recall,I believe WEATHER BUG had something to do with GATOR.

Here is the Office Depot add of next week for the free Kaspersky. It is on page 8. http://officedepot.shoplocal.c.....pot-080420 -- I think this is a good deal. All you end up paying is the sales tax on $80.

Like most commercial AV products, Kaspersky uses a subscription model. You get 1-year of protection included in the boxed version. As mentioned above, it's a 3 PC license which is good.

It seems that we now have free AV and subscription AV but nothing in between.
