AbiWord is a free word processor that is between Microsoft Word and Notepad. It is a vary good system for those who want simple to use word processor program. They have different sized downloads and instructions for each operating system.

I use Openoffice and it works well on XP and Vista
It has a word processor (I like it better than Microsoft) Presentation, Data Base, Drawing, Mathematical function creator, and a spreadsheet best of all its free. It is compatible with Microsoft you just have to make sure to save your document or project as the type of document you may want to open it with there is options for a lot of different formats including Microsoft.
