I'll put my question here 'cos it's the most popular forum so I'm working on the theory I'll get a pretty quick answer.

When the question of best browsers come up, invariably the Firefox fans come out in force always spouting on about the plethora of Extensions and Plugins available.

I've looked into the history of Firefox and it's humble beginnings (long time ago)...

However can any one tell me when the first 3rd party extension/plugin (freely available) was written and what it did ...

Plug-in history

Extract...

Plug-ins appeared as early as the mid 1970s, when the EDT text editor running on the Unisys VS/9 operating system using the Univac 90/60 series mainframe computer provided the ability to run a program from the editor and to allow such program to access the editor buffer, thus allowing an external program to access an edit session in memory. The plug-in program could make calls to the editor to have it perform text-editing services upon the buffer that the editor shared with the plug-in. The Waterloo Fortran compiler used this feature to allow interactive compilation of Fortran programs edited by EDT.

You may find your Firefox specific information here.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Gandalf, I'd already visited the Wikipedia site ...

It's got a pretty definite history of FF, but unfortunately doesn't say when the first plugin became available ....

Anyway thanks for the input ,,,
