I recently posted all the hardware I had for my first build. It's under "Need initial tips on a first build." I have it all put together. The PC starts up and seems to be running fine, I go into the CMOS or boot from the DVD drive and it goes fine for a little while. After about 30-45 seconds, the computer shuts down on its own. I'm awful at debugging this type of problem, and I don't know where to begin my search. Everything runs fine, no weird noises.

If anyone can help me figure out this problem, I would really appreciate it.

Going a little bit more in-depth when it comes to booting from the CD... It gets to the screen that says "windows is loading files," and that loading bar gets about 1/4 - 1/3 full, only to have the PC shut down.

Is this perhaps the motherboard protecting the CPU because it's getting too hot? I don't know how this is possible, I have the stock CPU cooler installed and its a pretty simple task.

An easy way to check is to turn on the puter and check if the CPU fan is working. if it is then thats not ur issue. Im trying to think what the issue could be, considering its all new gear?
Does it crash at the same spot everytime?
Ive had a similar problem that fixed itself. It came down to being the CD drive. How many install attempts have you made?

Double checking everything is installed/plugged in right, or making sure only the bare bones equipment is plugged in may be an option. It doesnt make sense but Ive experienced issues where the puter doesnt want to start/install on a fresh build with all the new gear plugged in. After installing the OS on bare bones and then plugging in my 'extras' everything is smooth...

Other than that, I havent a clue.

Could be so many things.

Doubt very much if it would be a CPU heat problem so soon after start-but presumably the paste was properly applied.

Try refitting the RAM modules and moving them around-try taking some out and see if the remaining works..

Try resetting the BIOS as per your mobo instructions.

For me this was a BIOS related problem, ultimately due to a faulty mobo-but we really cant jump to any such conclusions.

Double check that all the connectors are correctly installed for every item-fan headers, front panel headers etc.,also all the plugs as per your instructions book.

Otherwise its a process of deduction

Start with as little connected as possible - remove the power cables from all drives. Remove all cards except for the graphics card .

Switch it on and check .Then keep adding until the problem reoccurs

The POST beep codes are HERE

Good luck-very frustrating and a real time waster!

As for the POST beep codes ... Each boot has one beep, and one beep only. I was speaking with some people, and they seemed sure that is was my CPU overheating. Here comes the noob question of the day: Do stock CPU fans have thermal compound pre-applied?

They sometimes come with a thermal pad, not paste. Waste of time. You should clean everything off, clean properly, and lap with good quality thermal paste.
One's that do come with pre-applied paste. How long has it been sitting on the shelf. Has it dried out.
Always start from scratch, then you know it has been done properly.
(presuming you know how to do it properly).

I ordered from Newegg a little under a week ago, so I can't imagine it to have been on a shelf for too long. None the less, I'm going to go out and get some good thermal paste today... Hopefully that will solve the issue. Otherwise, I'm clueless.

edit: I got the CPU fan off, now all I need to do is properly clean the garbage thermal off. How would I go about properly cleaning it?

Isopropyl alcohol and clean soft cloth.

If you google "thermal paste vid", you will get a load of YouTube hits. Have a look through half a dozen or so.
The best one I ever saw, unfortunately I can't find now.

Alright will do, thank you. Once I get this done and re-apply new paste, I'll post an update.

Just don't use too much paste :)
In this instance, more is not better.

Rice grain-sized dab, spread across the entire CPU. Correct?

Yep. Tis good. You don't want it spilling over the side and causing a short.

what makes u think the CPU is over heating tho? even running the CPU without the paste should be fine under normal conditions? or so I thought...

Well, the EVGA motherboard i bought has a CPU temp monitor on it, and once the temperature settles, the monitor says something outrageous like 80 degrees, and I'm assuming that's celsius. It's only a matter of 30-100 seconds following that the PC shuts down. I have since removed the CPU fan entirely, and placed an order for Arctic Silver 5 from newegg.

Well, I'm quite happy to say that the thermal compound was a complete success. I don't know how to thank you, LH, as well as everyone else on HTG that has aided me in this process. I'd literally be lost without you guys.
