Firefox: Loading into Memory

I have a question about Firefox loading into memory. I read in a lot of forums that for the first time your start up your system, Firefox loads up slow. Maybe 10-15 seconds. But subsequently, it opens instantly like IE7 does. I've tried this on two of my friends' computers (who didn't have Firefox). I installed the same extensions as I had on mine. And true enough, except for the first time the computer starts up, Firefox loads almost as fast as Internet Explorer does.

Here's my question. How come that doesn't work for my computer? It takes 10-15 seconds every single time I open Firefox. It cannot be because of system specifications because my computer is twice as fast as one me friend's and four times faster than the other friend. And, I tried a fresh install by removing Firefox completely and having no extensions at all. Still it takes 10 seconds to load up.

I was wondering why there is such a big difference. The other 2 computers I've tried on are both Windows Vista. Only difference I know is that I'm running Zone Alarm and they're not. They both have AVG anti-virus as well.

I know about Firefox Preloader. But that's not much of a help. I can just use the Minimize to Tray extension and keep Firefox open all the time. I wouldn't ask for help if I didn't know why Firefox loads instantly for my friends and takes long for me.

Have you disabled superfetch / prefetch ?

The only reason why it would load faster on their system is because Windows has cached everything in memory...

For what it's worth, Firefox loads slower than dirt on just about every system I've ever worked with.

Oh no. I haven't disabled Prefetch/Superfetch. In fact, I even added /Prefetch:1 to the target of the Firefox shortcut. So when you right-click the Firefox shortcut icon and modify "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" to "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" /Prefetch:1, I was told it'll load faster. But there is no change. It takes up to 20 seconds now with no more than 5 extensions.

What happens when you disable Zone Alarm?

The other test, just for the heck of it, would be to try a new profile without addons. Close Firefox and type firefox.exe -ProfileManager in the run command.

I never knew about this prefetch or superfetch things. So, how can I tell whether mine is activated or deactivated? I know mine is loaded slow too when compared to IE7.

On another subject, I added a language into Firefox but it does not pick it up. I go to a particular website, and the text does not show in my native language. The question is why? I do not have this problem when I opened IE.

Superfetch is a service. Assuming you run Vista, click Start and type in services.msc and hit Enter. When the window opens, press your S key and look for Superfetch. It will either say "Started" under "Status" or nothing at all.
