Is there a way in Vista to set file's to open a default program.
when I open a .psd file it automatically opens Photoshop for me.
For most other file types .jpg, .gif it opens the Windows Photo Viewer.

Is there a way to change any settings for certain file types to open a specified program?

Yes, there is. Go to Control Panel -> (Programs) -> Default Programs. Choose "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" to choose which program opens a given file type by extension. The other choices from Default Programs provide other ways to deal with associations, too. If you find that Vista still doesn't give you enough control, this program was recommended by a fellow geek:

Thank you very much I didn't even think to look there. I remember seeing it briefly when I first got vista but didn't do much with it. That should give me enough control, if not I'll get the program you recommended.

Just as an addition: If you want to open with another than the default program "on occasion", you can right click the file and use "open with". If it does not show one of the programs you want, go to "Choose Default Program". From there you can access any program.

Yup thats what I have been stuck using lately until I fixed it.
However, I prefer all of my images to open in photo shop because I do some graphics design; also, for personal and business photos I am extremely used to the photoshop interface for cropping and other things.
I just like thins quick and easy, and the laptop touch pad is about the only thing I seem to have trouble switching to when I leave work and come home :)

I have always been tempted by photo shop - but you have to get a mortage to buy one. Apart from the Vista basics, I use Gimp2 - it's pretty good and for free.
