Hi gang, anyone know of a good site for a step by step use of using a wd external hard drive? How about a real manual, heck, all I've received is an installation booklet. It's a passport 250 gig.WD shows FAQ'S and other B.S.
Yours truly, Sparky

What could you possibly need to know. Just look at it as a BIG folder where you can create subfolders. That's really all you need to know. You can open it from "Computer" or if you make a shortcut on the dektop, then it is even easier.

Do plug it into your computer first.

Spacegold, our friend sparky is an electrician. He knows the plugging part. He just got scared when the Autoplay window popped up. LOL

Sparky, could you post the link of the pdf manual. I would be interested to see what they explain.
PS: just could not figure how a well versed Geek like you would need instructions for the external disk.

Sparky, what exactly are you trying to do which you are not sure about?
Just treat it like an overly large memory stick/flash drive (whatever you choose to call them)

https://support.dmailer.com/client/FAQ/FAQproduct.jsp?idProduct=18 I thank you for your kind remarks,I was merely wondering why WD didn't have a user manual for their product.I was able to transfer data from one machine to the other, much quicker than the old cd/dvd system.I'm getting rusty or maybe alzheimers is getting to me,lol

Much quicker? Yes definitely - will you be using it as a backup too?
Well, most don't bother anymore - they think that a quick start guide will suffice and then leave you to flounder :P

I think one should have a selection of external disks and a box full of USB drives with varying capacities. That stuff is so cheap now, that it is not worth mucking around with CD/DVDs. I chose to have several smaller disks (250GB) rather than one big one. Gives me more flexibility. For starters I need one for each of my 4 systems for imaging (Ghost and Macrium Manager). And then a few for miscellaneous tasks. It adds up. For the US, this is one possible site where you can find them at reasonable prices. The offerings change nearly daily.
