Hey, i think i posted a topic on this before... but this time its abit different. Last time i ended up reformating the computer.

the exact same thing happend, with no reason. i have absolutley NO idea why! and im 150% clean from viruses. ive checked with SpyBot, SAS and Kaspersky-IS.

So what happens is: When i boot the computer up it works, but when the desktop is suppose to load it gives me a black background with 2 error messages saying that Explorer.exe and dwm.exe cant start. It didnt give me any error codes or something.

I managed to FIX it this time to, or at least i THINK so. i inserted the vista install disk, and restored the computer 1 day back. and now it works again.

the reason im posting this is becouse i want to know why it happens, and if there is any way to keep it from happening. i wasnt running any special programs or anything, no registry editing, and no start up changing...

"...gives me a black background with 2 error messages saying that Explorer.exe and dwm.exe cant start..." could be caused due to corruption of the corresponding entries in the registry. My friend's laptop had encountered a similar problem (black background and everything) and was caused due to a virus corrupting the registry entry corresponding to Explorer.exe. Mabbe the same thing happened to your computer as well.

yea that might be true, but viruses cant survive a full reformate of ALL my drives, can it? i thought it was impossible, and this is the second time it has happend to be, and ive reformated the computer since last time.

I dont think it was coused by a virus either tho :/. But thnx for responding, if you have any other ideas please post! couse im dying of curiosity!!!

A virus should not be able to survive a full reformat of all the drives. My only guess is that the virus was able to enter your computer via an infected flash drive or some other infected media. Just to make sure, let me know what is the entry corresponding to Shell in the registry. The path is :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

If it is something other than Explorer.exe then try changing it to Explorer.exe and then reboot your computer. This should at least fix the black background problem.
