I doubt that they'd let me get another one, and my mom probably won't let me either. I guess I'll just have to live with it...

Maybe there's something in the registry that controls the sleep and everything?

So the only way to fix it is to send it back to Dell?

Thristle,

No; I didn't mean that. I only suggested that you get in touch with Dell because you said you have had problems with your machine from the start and thus far, we have not helped you with a solution.

Since, ScottW has a machine very much like yours, post back and maybe he can come up with something.

Don't like to tell anyone we can't help them unless a machine really does have a hardware problem.

Post back.

Kindest Regards,
Rick P.

Yeah, but I have no proof that it was broken before I even touched it...

There are so many problems in my event log, that the old ones vanished: there are 1,428 events since May 11th, the most recent one being today, at 15:10:16 EST

However, that's just in the Diagnostics-Performance tab...

Would this prove anything? I know that the event log said that there were critical and warning statuses in November of 2007, when my mom ordered the laptop...

Thristle,

The Event Logs can only hold so many events and then new events begin over writing the old events. Every time you boot the machine, events are written to the logs which is normal.

However, there should NOT be RED and YELLOW Warning Events in the logs unless something is indeed wrong with your machine, the setup or possibly the software.

If the machine began having RED and YELLOW Event Warnings in the logs from the day your Mom purchased it, then something was wrong with the machine when she bought it.

Do (NOT) clear the Event Logs because they tell one what is happening in your machine.

If you call DELL, the Support Technician will ask you what Events are in the Logs and may be able to tell you what to do.

Do you have a friend that REALLY KNOWS about computers that could look at your machine ??

Maybe you could take your machine to a Best Buy Store and one the (Geek Squad Folks) would look at the machine free for you ??

Also, if you live near a College, one the students or teachers may be glad to help you out for free.

Just some suggestions.

Actually, all of the events are either Warning or Critical....with about 6-7 happening every day, so I'm assuming that my laptop is just extra precautious? Because there are a few entries that are yellow, but they say that there are just some processes using too much RAM...and stuff like that.

I think that it usually only shuts down after sleeping if I leave it alone for about 2 or more hours....I know that there was a setting for how long you want to wait until it shuts down, but now it's not there, so I can't just turn that off.

Hey Thristle, i know it's been a while since your problem was posted. I recently had the same problem with my computer and it's actually a simple fix. If you open up your power options and choose what closing the lid does, make it so that when you press the power button, when you press the sleep button, and when you close the lid the computer goes to sleep. I had the same problem your having with my inspiron and that fixed it for me. Hope this helps you, good luck!
