I use vista at the moment, but I have recently decided to start using an old XP laptop again, and connect it to the internet. I am not sure if the ethernet port is broken though because when I connect it to my router the light does not show up on my router. I am just wondering how to find out whether it is working or not? Maybe though Device Manager? But i didn't know what name the ethernet port would be under in Device Manager.
It may also be just that I have not enabled connection though ethernet, beacuse I know it can be enabled and disabled on Vista quite easily.
Thnak you for your help!

Deney, Device Manager should definitely be your first stop. What do you see under "Network Adapters"? This will show you any working network hardware that has a working device driver assigned. Also, while you are in DevMgr, you should make sure there are no warning or error symbols -- "!", "X", "?".

The next stop would be Network Connections in Control Panel. You want to see a Local Area Connection with the status "Connected". That network connection should be bound to the working network adapter, and the TCP/IP protocol should be bound as well. Right-click on the Local Area Connection and select Properties to check the bindings.
