DVD_burner

Hello, after upgrading from Vista to W7, my CD/DVD drive reads fine but no longer writes -R or +R DVDs, though it seems to write RW DVDs (!?).
When I use basic Windows burning with R DVDs, I get a "Check that the latest firmware version is installed on the CD/DVD burner" error; when I use a burning program such as ImgBurn, I get a more detailed error as follows:
I/O Error!
Device: [1:0:0] HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20N WW01 (D:) (ATA)
ScsiStatus: 0x02
Interpretation: Write (10) - Sectors: 0 - 31
Sense Area: 70 00 03 00 00 00 00 0A 32 4D 03 0C 0C 00 00 00 00 00
Interpretation: Write Error

Any sort of hint/help/suggestions very welcome!

Because it's failing in two programs, could be the recorder but may be the media also.
Hard to tell and could be by coincidence with the Win7 install.

ATA (IDE) Recorders are only about $20 to $25 bucks now which is a "saving grace".

Also, try burning at a slower speed. It still gives an error ?

just tried burning at 4x instead of the default 8x -> same problem (no option lower than x4)...
