I bought a Simple tech 250 gb portable HD. My laptop recognizes it but my desktop will not. The desktop is probably close to 6 years old, but works well on XP.

Probably a matter of driver. Your laptop is probably Vista where the driver is being installed automatically. No such luxery in XP. You have to install the driver first.

Install the latest XP service pack... That would be SP3.
