You're welcome, whs. I realize that the tutorial I linked to disables the lock function, not just that button in the start menu. Is that what you wanted? I think if you try to lock the system, for example with Win+L, it won't work after that policy/registry change. Have you tried it yet?

I have used that to remove the lock buttons for a long time. Win+L can still be used to lock the system

Why do you want to remove it?
Although if you use Win+L all the time i guess the start menu button is kinda pointless

Aleeve, you may not believe this but I do not know how to unlock the damn thing after it's locked. My wife locked one of my systems and now I have to always go thru this rain dance to wake it up from sleep. There is somehow a void regarding "unlock" in my brain and it is so easy to miss the sleep button and lock yourself in.
@ScottW, no I have not tested it for the above reasons (in case it does not work).

whs, I did it months ago. It works. (But Win+L remains active)

If you have to unlock the thing every time it sleeps then it probably means you have that particular machine set to require password when waking up. On my laptop, this is under Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Power Options, then in the top left it has an option for "Require password on wake up", which should allow you to permanently set it to NOT require a password... dunno if this helps?

Thanks Coco for the hint. But I don't think it's that. I have no system password. It just comes back with XXX locked. Then I have to go thru this rain dance (choose other user - which is the same, click on that and then it works) to get back to the desktop. Just an unnecessary pain.

Every User Account in Windows has a password. If you didn't set one then the password is blank and thus it may not ask for one but it will still show the logon screen for you to select your account.
That setting will control that.

Well my locking button simply 'locks' the computer - the logon screen pops up and to resume what you were doing you have to type in password - everything is as it was - no need to save or anything

Whs - go into user accounts and set/unset a password!

Well, why didn't I find this the first time? The Geek has an article on disabling Lock using the same registry key:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto.....windows-l/

It's odd, because his article says it disables the Win+L key function. One person commenting on the article says that his Win+L still works but the Start Menu Lock Button is disabled -- just like Lighthouse. Does this key behave differently on different systems? Maybe there is some other setting somewhere that affects how it behaves.

The "Start Menu Lock Button" is not just disabled, but removed completely

I am not sure understand. After I applied the registry change, the lock button is still there and still acts up (turns blue) when I hover over it. So I am not sure what I got here.

Is it this ?
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableLockWorkStation"=dword:00000001

I am not sure what it did. I applied #2 of method 2 from this link http://www.vistax64.com/tutori.....elete.html that ScottW had supplied.
