Hello - I searched all over the forums for this answer as I am sure someone else is going nuts over this too. But no luck, so thus the new post. I have a new computer with Vista and whenever I pause the pointer over anything it automatically opens the item. I was able to stop this on the Start Menu in the properties where there was the option to turn it off. This only did it though for the task bar and start menu. The pointer is still opening up everything when I pause in programs such as Word menues and also on the internet. Any way to diable this very annoying feature? Thanks so much!!!

Go to Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Folder Options > Single - or double - click to open > General > in the 3d box check " Double click to open an item".

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately I already have this option choosen. Despite this whenever I put the pointer on an item in an internet page or on a title in a drop down menu, it automatically opens with no click at all. Just by hovering. Any other ideas?? It does this in any program. Thanks again!

Do you have a Desktop or a Laptop computer? For laptops there the touch pad can sometimes be set to auto click things.
On the option if you go to Organize->Folder Options does "Double-click to open an item (single-click to select) have a selected blue dot to the left of it? If so that is odd. That is the radio button that controls that behavior.

I have a laptop and when I go to the area you described I do have a blue dot in the radio button there. Too strange.

Are you using a Touchpad on the laptop or an external mouse? Sometimes touchpads come with features to do things automaticly.
There maybe a touchpad icon in the system tray by the clock. You should be able to double click it to go to the settings and see if there are any features that would do that.

I am using the joystick on the keyboard as my mouse. I went to those settings in the beginning and they do not give an option. I will try the external mouse option. I did double check and now while in windows explorer files open only with a double click. The problem I am still having is the following:

1. On any internet page if I hover the pointer over any type of link or "click" box for more than a second the item automatically launches. This is annoying as I scan the page determining what I want to do.
2. Also on the internet any drop menu's will drop and then if my pointer goes to any item for more than a second the item launches from the menu. This same thing occurs in word, excel, ect.

Anyone have any ideas how to turn this feature off. Sometimes I just want to browse the menu without everything launching.

Heeeellllpppp!

Control Panel > Ease of Access Center > Make the mouse easier to use
Uncheck the box that says "Activate a window...."
Does that help
ps I think you need to reboot for it to take effect
