Destop "files"

have xp, why do The "files", (manila file showing), of any item i save to my desktop, show in addition to the "saved item". everytime i save to desk top, i now have 2 items for each single "save to desktop" tks susan

I assume you're talking about saving webpages to your desktop. The shortcut itself is just the html of the webpage you saved. The folder contains things like images etc. on the webpage. Since you saved the page to your computer, the shortcut can't get the images from the internet, so it has to get them from this folder.
