Desktop Refreshing?

I have Vista Home Premium SP2 (build6002) running on a quad-core 2.2gig AMD Phenom 9550 processor with a NVidia GeForce 8300 graphics chip.

My issue is that about every two minutes the desktop screen goes blank (no icons, also the taskbar icons) for a split second. The screen comes back on with all icons intact but if I am working in a program anything I was doing when this happened is gone. Also, for a while the computer toolbar would appear, I managed to get that shut off. Now though the Windows Media Player pops up after this happens.

Can anybody advise what is happening and how to address this? I have an upgrade for Windows 7 and would like to get this fixed before I install it.

Thanks

Hello storries72, and welcome to HowToGeek. What I am understanding is that your problem is caused by Processes(ex. if "explorer.exe"(or any important process) ends/stops, that could happen).
So i suggest you to do a complete system scan for any virus/malware, I recommend you Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and do a full system scan.
Let us know, what happened.

Best wishes,
Thanks.

I have a feeling it's a hardware problem. Do you have another graphics card you could put in to test ?

I tried the malware program it found one, which I quarantined, but I still have the issue. The video chip is on the mother board, I do have an NVidia 7600 plug-in card. I will try this and see what happens. Thanks

@storrie72, did u touched ur windows files? according to me, its may be an OS problem. basically, the same kind of symptoms are seen when by mistake u unhide the protected OS files from "folder options" and delete them abruptly.

Hi storrie72,

The upgrade to Windows 7 could possibly solve your issue, who knows.

However, with what has already been suggested I'm not sure what to say. Make sure you're fully updated with the latest drivers for all of your hardware. Try making sure you're fully updated with all of Windows Update's critical updates.

You could open the Event Logger (Control Panel, Administrative Tools) and look for any yellow/red alerts in Applications in the Windows Logs section, that might give us an idea. Apart from that I'm not sure what to suggest. Updating your drivers probably won't work as you tried a different graphics chip, I suppose updating other drivers wouldn't hurt though.

Long shot, but you wouldn't happen to have Active Desktop accidentally turned on would you? :P

Just an idea. See if disabling Windows Media Center Extender Service (in Services) has any effect.
